Mother’s Day gifts she’ll actually love (and won’t break the bank)

08/05/2025

Mums are famously hard to buy for, especially when they tell you they don’t want anything. But if you’re looking to show your love in a way that’s heartfelt and helpful this Mother’s Day, here are 9 thoughtful, affordable gift ideas that go a little further than flowers and chocolate.

Some are practical, some are nostalgic, and a few could even help protect her from scammers.

1. Write her a handwritten letter

There’s something special about seeing your own name written in someone’s handwriting, especially from a loved one. A short letter with a memory, a thank you or a simple 'I love you' is something she can hold onto long after Mother's Day.

2. Bake her something

You don’t need to be a MasterChef contestant to whip up something meaningful. Whether it’s a batch of biscuits, banana bread or a fresh sourdough loaf, the gesture (and the smell) will make her day.

3. Weed her garden bed or mow her lawns

If she’s got a veggie patch or a garden bed, get out there and do the hard work. Pull out the weeds, top up her mulch or soil, or run the mower or wiper snipper around the lawn. It’s a small act of service that shows big love and gives her a well-earned break.

4. Take her to the botanical gardens

No expensive booking needed. Just pack a blanket, a thermos of tea and a few homemade snacks and take a stroll among the flowers. It’s a relaxed, low-pressure way to spend quality time together.

5. Set up her tech and phone security

This one is a modern love language and a very useful one. Spend an hour setting up her phone properly:

  • Update her apps, especially banking, email and social ones
  • Turn on automatic updates
  • Enable biometric login (Face ID or fingerprint) for secure access
  • Check her app permissions
  • Turn on multi-factor authentication (MFA) for her banking and email
  • Review scam protection settings in her SMS and email filters
  • Show her on her phone, how to long-hold on a link sent by SMS or email to preview the webpage before clicking, so she’s not tempted by dodgy links

This small act (or big act depending on her technical ability) could be the reason she doesn’t fall for a scam in the future.

6. Make her a cuppa and actually sit down for a chat

Not a rushed one in the middle of a busy day. A proper, phone-free cup of tea or coffee catch-up. Ask her about childhood or favourite memories. Make space for the kind of conversation that reminds her how loved she is.

7. Offer to help with her with her ‘life admin’

Whether it’s returning a parcel, filling a script or picking up some milk and bread, take something off her plate. Better still, don’t make her ask.

8. Cook her favourite meal (clean up included)

You don’t need a reservation or a $100 steak. Find out what meal she really loves (comfort food counts) and make it for her. Just don’t leave the kitchen looking like a cyclone hit it.

9. Take her to your fav local shop or op shop and treat her

Let her pick something small but indulgent. A teacup she wouldn’t normally buy, a book she’s been eyeing, a vintage scarf. This isn’t about the price. It’s about letting her choose something just for her.

One last thing

If you’re setting up your mum’s phone this Mother’s Day, make sure she knows this:

No legitimate bank, government agency or company will ever ask for her secure code. Not over the phone. Not by SMS. Not via email.

If she gets a call saying otherwise, tell her to hang up and call the company back on their official number. It might just be the best gift you can give.
